BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, ND (1578-86)-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Juan Ballesteros (B). Philip II. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, AU Details.
KM-4.2; Cal-525. Weight: 13.66 gms. Variety with 6 fleurs de lis. Struck on a broad flan, this cob displays the king's full name on its obverse legend. Some die rotation on the left side has resulted in an intriguing repetition of the assayer's initial, appearing twice below the mintmark. Some corrosive patination is evident along the top of the obverse, accounting for the grade, and the coin exhibits areas with vibrantly iridescent modern toning. The reverse shows well-struck and finely detailed pairs of lions and castles surrounded by a rather full legend, albeit with some curiously missing characters. An eye-catching piece, highly individual in both strike and surface. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click here.
