BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, ND (1589-91)-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Baltasar Ramos Leceta (RL). Philip II. PCGS EF-40.
KM-4.2; Cal-528; cf. Sellschopp-249. Weight: 13.51 gms. A well-detailed cob sporting a pleasing medium gray tone. Although PCGS dates the coin to 1574-76, the assayer's mark more closely resembles the "RL" monogram used by Ramos Leceta from 1689 to 1691. Attribution aside, this piece offers remarkable completeness. The mintmark, assayer's monogram, and denomination mark stand out boldly as they flank the strongly detailed Habsburg shield on the obverse. Along the rim, King Philip II's name remains nearly whole. The reverse lions and castles retain sharp detailing along with the prominent title of "REX" from the surrounding legend. Altogether a problem-free and appealing example.
