BOLIVIA. Cob 8 Reales, 1629-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Juan Jimenez de Tapia (T). Philip IV. PCGS EF-45.
KM-19A; Cal-1454. Weight: 26.90 gms. This sharply struck cob presents attractively argent surfaces. The obverse was unfortunately struck off-center in a way that left most of the assayer's initial off-flan. The four digits of the date are all at least partially visible, with the crucial final two appearing with full clarity. With the date known for certain, examination of the vestiges of the initial and the style of the lions makes the assayer Tapia the most likely option. The fragments of the outer legends that peek though add intrigue to this handsome piece. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click
