BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, ND (1649-51)-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Juan Rodriguez de Rodas (O). Philip IV. PCGS Genuine--Devices Engraved, Fine Details.
KM-17B; Cal-Type-279. Weight: 13.54 gms. A strikingly handsome Cob, well-struck on a broad, round planchet. An uncountermarked example, thus RARE for this date. The obverse shows the full name and ordinal of the monarch, a presentable central shield, and bold and complete mintmark, assayer's symbol, and denomination. The reverse offers a complete cross with castles and lions, surrounded by unbroken octolobes. Much of the peripheral legend appears, though unfortunately no date. There are some areas of minor tooling on the peripheries, including a curiously traced digit "6" on the date. However, the tooling is easy to ignore and does not detract from this coin's considerable good looks. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click
