BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, 1651-P. Potosi Mint, Assayer Antonia de Ergueta (E). Philip IV. PCGS EF-40; Countermark: AU Details.
KM-17B; Cal-1108. Weight: 13.15 gms. An intriguing teardrop-shaped 4 Reales piece. The obverse displays a mintmark and assayer's initial to the left of the Habsburg shield, which retains generous detail on its surviving sections. Below the initial is a bold crowned "F" countermark, intended to revalue the piece at 3 3/4 Reales. The reverse is slightly off-center and has areas of weakness, but displays mostly complete castles and lions. The surfaces are steely-gray with minimal signs of corrosion. An appealing example of this SCARCE issue. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click here.
