BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, 1653-P. Potosi Mint, Assayer Antonia de Ergueta (E). Philip IV. PCGS VF-30.
KM-18; Cal-1116. Weight: 12.71 gms. Variety with retrograde "4" and "PH" at top. Among the earlier examples of the finalized redesigned coinage, this type displays the first two letters of the monarch's name at top between the pillars. The obverse additionally offers two bold mintmarks and an assayer's initial, along with a partially muddled central date and two digits of the date on the outer legend. The reverse is bold and impressive, with clear mintmark, assayer's initial, and three-digit date, along with a pomegranate, each at one terminal of the central cross. Within the cross, the castles and lions are attractively rendered. This piece is beautifully toned to gunmetal gray with darker patina surrounding the devices. This problem-free example with stately eye appeal will please any collector of the series. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click
