BOLIVIA. Duo of Cob 4 Reales (2 Pieces), ND (1626-51)-P. Potosi Mint. Philip IV. Both PCGS Genuine--Salt Water Damage, Fine Details Certified.
cf. KM-17A; Cal-Type-279. Countermark grade: VF Details (Both coins). Weights: 14.84 gms and 9.88 gms. This pair of salvaged Potosi cobs come from the 1654 La Capitana shipwreck. Both coins carry the "crowned L" countermarks, thought to have been applied to existing silver pieces following the 1649 Potosi Mint Scandal. While these pieces are heavily corroded from their time spent in the sea, their countermarks are impressively bold and undamaged. An intriguing pair of cobs with great historical interest.
