BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, 1685-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Pedro de Villar (VR). Charles II. PCGS VF-35.
KM-25; Cal-522. Weight: 11.52 gms. This pleasingly detailed cob exhibits a lovely deep cabinet tone. The mintmark, denomination, date, and the assayer's distinctive monogram are clearly presented on the obverse. The reverse includes part of the monogram, the final digit of the date, and the king's ordinal. The lions in the center are rendered in the interesting, somewhat cartoonish style typical of the time of this assayer. Though struck on a slightly short and underweight flan, this coin's abundant detail and eye-appeal make it a highly desirable piece. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click
