BOLIVIA. Mint Error -- Struck with 4 Reales Reverse Die -- Cob 2 Reales, (1728-32)-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Jose Matienzo (M). Philip V. PCGS VG-08.
KM-29; Cal-Type-114. Weight: 5.99 gms. Despite the circulation wear, this curious 2 Reales piece has an unmistakable error: the reverse shows a distinct "4" as the denomination, meaning it was struck with a 4 Reales die. This interesting coin is perhaps a testament to the haste with which cobs were struck in this period of the Potosi mint's production. The surface wear indicates that in spite of the error, the coin circulated widely as a 2 Reales piece. The obverse displays a clear denomination "2", meaning at least this side was struck with the correct die, along with the assayer's initial and the first digit of the date. The obverse center exhibits evidence of past mounting, perhaps as a brooch pendant. This coin otherwise has clear surfaces with a pleasing champagne tinted toning.
