The northeastern Brazilian state of Ceara first issued this distinctive star counterstamp in 1833 in response to a local coin shortage. The official counterstamps were only applied to copper host coins, and the practice ceased in 1834 when the shortage was resolved. Counterfeit stamps such as the present example are quite common within the series, and are easily identified as no official countermarks were applied to silver hosts, as well as by the style of the star and the quality of the die cutting.
