GIBRALTAR. Gibraltar - Mexico. Bit, ND (1770-72). PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, VF Details.
KM-17.1 (Martinique); Prid-19 (Dominica). Type IV countermark: blunt heart-shaped cut-out with ornamented edges; all on a 1741-Mo MF Mexico Real (KM-75.1). This series was originally given to Martinique in the literature--where it still appears in KM--but is now believed to be from Gibraltar instead. This example, using a Mexico City Real as a host coin, displays satisfying preserved details and pleasing light olive toning despite evidence of cleaning. A charming example of this interesting type.
