GUATEMALA. Cob 4 Reales, 1737-G. Guatemala Mint; Assayer Jose de Leon y Losa (J). Philip V. PCGS Genuine--Holed, Fine Details.
KM-5; Cal-1008; KM-87.2 (for countermark). Weight: 13.05 gms. Guatemala (Central American Republic) Type II Countermark; sun over mountains within circular border. Countermark grade: VF Details. This well-circulated Guatemalan cob was struck on a long, narrow planchet. While much of the devices are worn away or off-flan, the coin retains the final three digits of the date, the mintmark, and the denomination mark, all with satisfying clarity. The later countermark was punched firmly on the center of the obverse, which created a protrusion on the opposite side. The coin has been holed near the rim, as is typical. An overall pleasing and interesting countermarked silver piece. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click here.
