GUATEMALA. 4 Reales, 1790-NG. Nueva Guatemala Mint; Assayer Manuel Eusebio Sanchez (M). Charles IV. PCGS EF-45.
KM-52; Cal-731. This wonderfully well-preserved 4 Reales piece, the finest of just two certified by PCGS, is from the first year to feature the bust of Charles IV. The new king's portrait is expertly executed, with its intricate facial details fully present. The reverse is just as impressive, with its tiny details such as the castles' masonry, lions' manes, and fleurs de lis all sharply visible. The surfaces are elegantly toned to a deep yet moderate pewter gray. Already quite a SCARCE issue, certainly even more elusive in this state of preservation.
