GUATEMALA. Central American Republic. 4 Reales, ND (1839). PCGS Genuine--Holed, VF Details; Countermark: VF Details.
KM-89.2. Weight: 12.66 gms. Type II countermark on a Mexico City Cob 4 Reales piece. An interesting piece with much visual appeal. Struck on a round planchet, the Mexican host coin can be attributed to the reign of Philip II due to the remaining legends and the layout of the central Habsburg shield. The well-centered cob displays retains abundant detail including the reverse cross with its castles and lions. Because of its style and strike, the Guatemalan countermark is likely a contemporary counterfeit. The noted hole is on the rim around 11 o'clock and does not affect any of the designs. A pleasing piece with bright surfaces and dark toning in the protected areas. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click here.
