GUATEMALA. Central American Republic. 4 Reales, ND (1839). PCGS FINE-12; Countermark: VF Details.
KM-87.2. Weight: 13.18 gms. Type II countermark; sun over mountains within circular border. Countermark applied to a 175X Guatemala Cob 4 Reales. While the final digit of the host coin is off-flan, it remains a fairly pleasing host on account of its neat square planchet and pewter-gray toning. Curiously, this piece carries a contemporary counterfeit countermark on its reverse in addition to the genuine countermark on the obverse. This determination can be made because the second countermark is far neater than it should be, and it was certainly applied later since the strike has slightly deformed the proper countermark on the opposite side. A unique and interesting example of the type with plenty of visual appeal. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click here.
