HONDURAS. '"Imitation Cob" 4 Reales, 1824-P Y. Tegucigalpa Mint. PCGS EF-40.
KM-16.2. Variety with normal "4" and transposed left-facing lions and castles. This RARE provisional "imitation cob" offers stunning clarity and originality. The obverse devices, curiously combining the mintmark of Potosi issues with the wave pattern of Lima issues, are bold and fully present on the pleasingly round flan. The reverse is well-centered, clearly displaying three of the four marks at the ends of the cross. Within the quadrants of the cross, the castles and lions are charmingly abstract. Around the rims, much of the border remains. The surfaces are remarkably bright and lightly toned to an attractive dove gray. Offering two bold dates and free from the problems that often plague this two-year series, this choice example presents a rare opportunity for collectors of Central American issues. Accordingly, fierce competition for this lot can be expected.
