MEXICO. Cob 4 Reales, ND (1544)-M A. Mexico City Mint. Carlos & Johanna (Late Series). PCGS Genuine--Plugged, AU Details.
KM-18; Cal-131. From a SCARCE assayer, this piece serves as an eye-catching example of an elusive issue. The surfaces are deeply toned and display vibrant rainbow iridescence in the central devices. The obverse is slightly double-struck but offers pleasing details. The well-centered reverse shows full legends and handsome central arms. There are some scattered contact marks in the fields and a nearly invisible plugged hole on the periphery, but this coin remains an alluring example from one of the Spanish Empire's most elegantly designed types.
