MEXICO. Cob 4 Reales, ND (1556-98). Mexico City Mint. Philip II. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, EF Details.
KM-36; Cal Type-158. Weight: 13.46 gms. This Cob offers great peripheral detail. The obverse displays the king's full name and ordinal "PIIILIPVS II", and the reverse contains the full word "HISPANIARVM". The mintmark appears somewhat faint but legible to the left of the pleasing Habsburg shield, and the castles and lions are decently presented. The surfaces are somewhat rough with a few spots of black corrosive patina, and there is a notable flan crack around 11 o'clock on the obverse. Despite these drawbacks, the coin remains appealing and satisfyingly detailed. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click
