MEXICO. Cob 4 Reales, 1639-Mo. Mexico City Mint, Assayer P. Philip IV. PCGS Genuine--Test Cut, VF Details.
KM-38; Cal-1062. Weight: 12.87 gms. This intriguing Cob shows signs of extensive circulation across a wide geographic area. The obverse bears several deep test cuts. The reverse shows a cluster of tiny banker's marks, likely East Asian in origin, which presumably served to attest to the coin's quality. Despite its damage and wear, the piece still displays a clear mintmark and date. A curious piece that must have changed hands many times throughout its long circulation. Though not a thing of beauty, this Cob is undeniably interesting. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click
