MEXICO. Mint Error -- Struck with 4 Reales Reverse Die -- Cob 8 Reales, ND (1622-67)-Mo. Mexico City Mint. Philip IV. PCGS Genuine--Salt Water Damage, Fine Details.
cf. KM-45; cf. Cal Type-319. Weight: 19.86 gms. This crude 8 Reales piece is certainly individual. It exhibits a large hole in the center due to a planchet flaw. While the reverse is mostly intact and nicely toned, the obverse is significantly corroded from saltwater damage. Despite the corrosion, the denomination "4" is quite distinct, meaning it must have been struck with an incorrect die as the coin weights far too much to be a 4 Reales piece. This strange piece must have had quite an interesting history, from the moment it was produced until today. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click
