MEXICO. 8 Reales Klippe, 1733-Mo. Mexico City Mint, Assayer Francisco de la Pena (F) and Manuel de la Pena (M). Philip V. PCGS Genuine--Damage, EF Details.
KM-48; Cal-1431. Weight: 26.57 gms. This impressive 8 Reales Klippe is boldly struck on a broad square planchet. The obverse shows an imposing crowned shield with sharply struck mintmark, denomination, and assayers' initials. Part of the monarch's name "PHIL..." and his ordinal appear on the outer legend along with a clear full date. The reverse proudly displays an elaborately detailed cross with castles and lions within complete octolobes, with generous portions of the outer legend readable. The fields are deeply toned to charcoal gray, contrasting brilliantly with the bright details. Minor spots of corrosion on the rims account for the grade, but are easily missed as the coin is otherwise wholesome and wonderfully original. This attractive example will certainly be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click
