MEXICO. Silver Proclamation Medal (4 Reales), 1789. Charles IV. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, AU Details.
Grove-C-10; Medina-186; Herrera-162. Diameter: 34mm. Commemorating the proclamation of Charles IV as king in Mexico City. Obverse: Crowned coat-of-arms of Spain between crowned and garlanded Pillars of Hercules; Reverse: Legend, date, and "denomination" in five lines; all within wreath. This interesting proclamation medal, quite unusually, features the denomination (4 Reales) on the reverse. The surfaces are quite lustrous and display eye-catching toning with warm rosy color in the centers and dark gray smoky highlights around the peripheries. The well-struck details are handsomely presented and sharp. Various areas of tooling in the fields are noted. While these marks are undoubtedly unfortunate, the medal retains more than enough eye appeal to remain an enticing offering. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click here.
