PERU. Cob 4 Reales, (1577-88)-P. Lima Mint; Assayer Diego de la Torre (Do). Philip II. PCGS EF-40.
KM-11; Cal-499. Weight: 13.53 gms. A particularly beautiful cob, exemplary of the high quality production that earned the assayer Diego de la Torre his esteemed reputation among numismatists. This piece is boldly struck, with fully readable legends. Each section of the Habsburg shield is distinct, and the marks on either side of it are sharply visible. The reverse is especially well-struck, with the most minute details such as the masonry on the castles and the lions' mouths visible. The surfaces are gently toned to a radiant pewter gray, with darker hues around the devices that accentuate the delicate details. This elegant example is destined to attract attention from discerning collectors. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click
