PERU. Cob 4 Reales, (1577-88)-P. Lima Mint; Assayer Diego de la Torre (Do). Philip II. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, EF Details.
KM-11; Cal-501; Sellschopp-112. Weight: 13.71 gms. This darkly-toned cob is the product of the first period of the Lima mint's operation, before it was shuttered in favor of the more conveniently located mint at Potosi. The piece was struck on a full round flan with carefully produced dies, as is to be expected from this period. The mintmark "P" (for Peru) appears above the denomination to the left of the Habsburg shield; on the right, the star above the assayer's initial is all that differentiates this issue from those of the Potosi mint. Around, much of the peripheral legend, including the monarch's name, remains intact. On the reverse, the castles and lions are rendered in fine style within complete octolobes, all surrounded by another nearly full legend. An abundantly appealing piece.
