PERU. Cob 4 Reales, 1659-L. Lima Mint; Assayer Juan de Villegas (V). Philip IV. PCGS VF-35.
KM-17; Cal-1014; Sellschopp/Grunthal-77. Weight: 13.23 gms. An appealing piece of the RARE and coveted "Star of Lima" issue. Struck on an unusually broad flan, most of the monarch's name in the peripheral legend is boldly presented. Although most of the central devices are unfortunately flat, the assayer's initial "V" is quite clear, as are the waves below the pillars. The reverse also presents some flatness, yet it proudly preserves the "REX HISP" from the legend. This quite original rarity offers a gorgeous deep cabinet tone upon which to admire its detail. A wonderful example of this elusive type. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click
