PERU. Cob 4 Reales, 1684-L. Lima Mint; Assayer Juan de Villegas (V). Charles II. PCGS EF-45.
KM-23; Cal-459. Weight: 13.54 gms. This impressively detailed cob is visually striking. The obverse displays a mintmark, denomination, and assayer's initial on the top row of the central devices along with a perfectly-struck and bold date. Above them, the crown is unusually clear and attractive. The reverse has some doubling but is no less well preserved, offering sharp details on the central design. Though none of the marks around the cross are visible, a seldom-seen portion of the outer legend does appear. This coin is complemented by its elegant cabinet toning that shimmers with pink hues on the high points. A head-turning piece with a unique charm unrivaled by most other cob issues of the period.
