PERU. Silver Victory at Yanacocha Medal, ND (ca. 1835). PCGS MS-63.
Fonrobert-9262. Obverse: Hands holding liberty cap on a staff inside seven-point sun-shape within plain circle inside seven-point star. Reverse: VENCI / EN YANA / COCHA within 12-pointed star. This very well-preserved medal shows lustrous surfaces toned to an attractive mottled gray. The designs are sharp and well-struck with pleasing relief. A SCARCE piece, this being the only one certified in the PCGS census.

The Battle of Yanacocha was one of the key engagements of the 1835-1836 Peruvian Civil War. The Bolivian general Andres de Santa Cruz secured a victory there in 1835 and ultimately won the war, thus establishing the unified Peru-Bolivian Confederation. This unified state would be dissolved less than three years later after protracted conflict both with its neighbors and internal dissidents. Because this interesting medal features the arms of Argentina on the obverse, it was likely issued to Argentine troops who participated in the Battle of Yanacocha on the side of Santa Cruz.
