PERU. South Peru. Independence Medallic 4 Reales, 1836. PCGS MS-62.
Fonrobert-9227; Bustamante-936.02. Obverse: Coat-of-arms motif with radiant sunface at center, four stars above and FEDERACION below; Reverse: 9-line inscription. This SCARCE medallic issue was minted at the weight of 4 Reales and was evidently circulated as such, since most examples exhibit a fair amount of wear. The present coin, on the other hand, was gently handled and retains fresh details. The center of the planchet shows some weakness, as is typical, but the piece is otherwise remarkably unblemished with only a faint hint of friction. The surfaces are elegantly toned to a deep cabinet gray with strong luster and traces of iridescent vibrance. This example is the finest certified at either PCGS or NGC and is sure to excite quality-conscious collectors of Latin American issues. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click
