UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Admiral Vernon/Battle of Porto Bello Bath Metal Medal, 1739. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, AU Details.
Adams/Chao-PBvi-5-E (R-5); M/G-96. Diameter: 40mm. On the capture of Porto Bello (in what is now Panama) between Spain and Great Britain. Obverse: Vernon standing left between cannon and ship; Reverse: naval battle at Porto Bello. This impressively well-preserved medal is extensively detailed with high relief devices. The surfaces are richly toned to a chocolate brown color. There are minor specks of encrustation in a few characters in the legends, some of which have been removed. Two miniscule scratches on the bottom right of the reverse, just above the exergual line, and a spot of discoloration on the obverse are the closest thing this numismatist could find to account for the "tooling" noted by PCGS. The medal is otherwise wholesome and fully satisfying. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click
