UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Admirals Vernon & Blas de Lezo (Don Blass)/Battle of Porto Bello Bath Metal Medal, 1739. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, AU Details.
Adams/Chao-PBv1-2-B (R-5); M/G-165. Diameter: 37.3mm. On the capture of Porto Bello (in what is now Panama) between Spain and Great Britain. Obverse: Blas de Lezo kneeling before Edward Vernon; to right, ship sailing in the distance; Reverse: naval battle at Porto Bello. This richly detailed medal features an elaborate naval battle scene and legends that gloat about Spain's humiliating defeat at the hands of Admiral Vernon. The surfaces are deeply toned to a lustrous coffee-brown. Some corrosion is visible on both sides, accounting for PCGS's designation. However, the copious original detail that remains is more than satisfying, and the medal is overall quite charming. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click
