CHILE. Peso, "1883"-So (1925-26). Santiago Mint. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details.
KM-142.3. Flat top 3 variety. Mintage: 149,000. This sharply defined About Uncirculated piece has retoned quite nicely in mottled lavender-gray and deep cobalt iridescence. Both sides exhibit a considerable outlay of lighter smoky silver patina when illuminated. Quite appealing for this RARE variety struck during the 1920s.

Two new varieties of 1883-dated Chilean Peso were struck in 1925 and 1926: those with medal alignment and those with coin alignment. Both are discernable from originals by the "flat top" 3 in the date. The present coin featuring coin alignment, it is technically the scarcer of the two going off mintage figures in Krause. However, the vast majority of these retro strikings were melted in 1927, causing both varieties to become highly desirable rarities.

Estimate: $100 - $150
