SAINT VINCENT. Earl of St. Vincent's Reward Silver Medal, 1800. Extremely Fine, Holed.
Eimer-919; BHM-489; Pollard-19; Flaxman-17B. Diameter: 47mm; Weight: approx. 23 gms. Obverse: EARL St VINCENT'S TESTIMONY OF APPROBATION, Admiral John Jervis, Earl of St. Vincent bust left in laurel wreath; Reverse: LOYAL AND TRUE, Naval officer and bluejacket stand and shake hands, backdropped by the Union Jack inside wreath topped with crown; Edge: Plain. A VERY RARE and truly personal British Navy artifact that will delight collectors. Though this example is holed and suspended from a blue ribbon, many of the few survivors show a similar hole punched at 12 o'clock, indicating that the sailors and marines who received these medals chose to wear them. Additionally, the recipient of this particular medal likely graffitied his initials at 10 and 2 o'clock on the reverse, where it appears two "J"s were scratched into the field. While the obverse field exhibits signs of polishing, there is very little wear across the high points, and all details remain evident. A good number of areas still boast original brilliance along with some deep cobalt blue tone in the recesses.

Sailors on HMS Victory (of Trafalgar fame) mutinied under the strict command of Admiral Jervis. However, the seamen and marines who had remained loyal during the mutiny, following Jervis when he switched his command to the Ville de Paris, each received a silver medal like the one presented in this lot.

Estimate: $600 - $800
