FRANCE. Movie Money Fantasy 50 Francs, "1862" (ca. 1909). Paris Mint. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Unc Details.
Pertaining to both numismatics and early French cinema, this highly realistic and VERY RARE movie prop still retains a significant amount of its original gilding in protected areas. Surfaces are brilliant and flashy, and although PCGS describes this piece as "cleaned," the cataloger can detect little evidence of tampering aside for some miniscule hairlines in the fields. Boldly struck and Uncirculated, it is a very interesting piece to examine.
Film director Louis Feuillade commissioned the Paris Mint to strike fantasy 50 Francs and 100 Francs for use in the lost silent film Le Tricheur (The Cheater) also called Le Grec (The Greek). It is interesting to hypothesize what role they would have played in the film.
Estimate: $300 - $500
