GPH-Unlisted; Goethe Coll-1572. By the Loos Workshop in Berlin. Diameter: 42mm; Weight: 25.46 gms. Issued for engraving and presentation to relatives of the deceased [here unengraved]. Obverse: DER HERR NAHM (that which the Lord hath taken...), veiled woman facing, head right, grieving at a crucifix; Reverse: DER HERR GIEBT WIEDER (...He shall give again), ornate altar bearing open Bible. Edge: Plain. Attractively toned and highly prooflike. A fairly SCARCE and moving piece.
Generally presented as a commemorative to a relative of one dearly departed, these medals were usually engraved in the exergue on the obverse with the name, birth, and death date of the person deceased, all while reminding that, no matter of terrestrial life, the Bible offers that which is everlasting.
