RUSSIA. Commissariat of Trade. Gostorg State Trading Company. Tea Brick Money, ND (ca. 1920s-30s). EXTREMELY FINE.
Dimensions approximately: 320mm x 140mm x 30mm. Weight: 1420 gms. Obverse: "Г̄OCTOPГ̄" ["Gostorg"] within triangle, uncertain cursive pattern above (Mongol?). A VERY RARE surviving Soviet Tea Brick, this examples features coarsely pressed tea and charming preservation, with limited flaking. Gostrogs were authorized Soviet foreign trade agencies that worked on the behest of the state. This example almost certainly predates the Second World War, likely being a 1920s issue. A curious piece for those fascinated by unusual numismatic treasures.
