SOUTH AFRICA. Cape of Good Hope. Bronze Penny Pattern, "1889". Victoria. NGC MS-65 Brown.
KMX-1; Hern-C9. Close colons. Wonderfully smooth with rich chocolate to deep hazel surfaces and a rather brazen sapphire overtone that easily catches the brilliance. Closer examination under a light reveals some mint red in the protected areas of the reverse, while bold details and a sharp wire rim indicate a well executed strike. Hern describes these pieces as salesman's samples and not true proofs, but it is apparent that, on this piece, special treatment was at least given to the dies prior to striking.
