SWEDEN. Oscar II/Freemasons Bronze Medal, 1906. CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
Ehrensvärd-55; Peltzer-469. By E. Lindberg. Diameter: 50mm; Weight: 66.31 gms. Commemorating the 150th anniversary of the founding of St. John's Lodge of St. Erik. Obverse: Masonia (female allegorical representation of masonry) standing left, lifting veil; Sphinx in background to left; star-filled sky above; Reverse: Medallion containing bust of Oscar II left surrounded by OSCAR II SVERIGES KONUNG IX FRIMURARE-PROV V S V; below, cartouche with three line inscription reading MINNE AF S:T JOHANNIS-/ LOGEN SANCT ERIKS / 150 : &ARIGA VERKSAMHET; wreath with woven banner in background; hammer, compass, and carpenter's square below. Edge: Plain. Tan-light brown surfaces, with some subtle cleaning. A fairly SCARCE and interesting masonic type.

This venerable lodge was founded in 1756, enacted by Carl Fredrik Scheffer-a diplomat, politician, and writer. The iconography of the obverse alludes to the Rite of Memphis-Misraim-or, more simply, Egyptian Freemasonry-with the reference to the Sphinx.

Estimate: $75 - $150
