Tahiti ND (ca. 1940) P-16a PMG Very Fine 25 100 Francs on 20 Francs

An exceptional rarity from Tahiti, very seldom offered for sale and missing from even the most advanced collections. Black 100 Francs overprint on Red 20 Francs on both sides. The Kolsky-Muszynksi catalog pictures a cancelled note and states that 12,000 pieces were issued (blocks A.28 through M.28, twelve blocks and 1,000 notes for each block), and just 278 remained outstanding in 1967. They give it a rarity of "R6", which means "nearly unique (2 or 3 known)". There may be a few more that have turned up since the publication of that catalog, but the fact remains that this is an exceptional rare issue to find in any grade. This is the only example in the PMG population report, and none have been offered at public auction for quite a few years. A contemporary annotation is found on the back and adds to the charm of the piece, which is otherwise free of repairs or other distractions. An extremely rare opportunity for the French Colonial specialist not to be missed. PMG mentions "Annotation".
