1861 Three-Dollar Gold Piece. ANACS AU DETAILS NET VF20. EX-JEWELRY-CLEANED. 971800. The onset of the American Civil War in 1861 effectively drove gold and silver coins out of circulation. Only 5,959 business strikes were produced in 1861. In 2005, Dave Bowers and Doug Winter estimated 180 to 230 coins are known in circulated condition.
