YORK. Edward IV. First reign, 1461-1470. AR Groat (25mm, 2.91 g, 2h). Light coinage, type Vd/VI mule. Tower (London) mint; im: rose/sun. Struck 1465. Crowned facing bust within tressure of arches; fleurs on cusps; fleur (over C) on breast, quatrefoils flanking neck / Long cross pattée; triple pellets in quarters. Blunt & Whitton p. 155, 3; North 1581/1568; SCBC 2008/2000. Once cleaned, now retoning, irregular flan, holed and plugged. Near VF. Struck from a reworked die originally intended for the Coventry mint. Extremely rare.

From the Arthur M. Fitts III Collection. Ex St. James 5 (27 September 2006), lot 215.

Interestingly, while this obverse die was apparently originally engraved for a type Vd issue of Coventry, none are otherwise known to have been issued.
