YORK. Edward IV. First reign, 1461-1470. AR Penny (14mm, 0.51 g, 2h). Contemporary counterfeit of a Light coinage issue of the York mint. Struck in an illicit mint in London, circa 1490-1500. Crowned facing bust / Long cross pattée with voided quatrefoil at center; triples pellets in quarters. M. Archibald, "The Queenhithe Hoard of Late-Fifteenth-Century Forgeries," in BNJ 50 (1980), p. 62, York rev. 1. Toned, rough surfaces characteristic of these base silver imitations. Fine.
