18th Century Fantasy: Bruttium, Rhegion in alliance with Sicily, Syracuse AR Tridrachm. Based mainly on the types of Syracuse under Hiketas, circa 285 BC. Head of Kore-Persephone to left, wearing grain wreath, earring and necklace; cornucopiae behind, BECINOS (sic!) before / Nike, holding reins and short sceptre, driving slow quadriga to left; bukranion above, ΣYPAKOΣIΩN in exergue. For prototype, cf. SNG ANS 754; cf. BMC 438-9; HGC 2, 1349. 14.13g, 26mm, 12h.

Condition as seen.

From a private English collection.

It is tempting to view the city ethnic of Rhegion on the obverse of the present fantasy coin as a thinly veiled reference to the well-known forger of ancient coins, Carl Wilhelm Becker (1772-1830).
