Islands off Thrace, Thasos AR Hemiobol. Contemporary imitation(?), circa 412-404 BC. Head of satyr to right / Two dolphins swimming in opposite directions; Θ-Α-Σ between and above; all within shallow incuse square. Le Rider, Thasiennes 12 var. (position of ethnic; direction of dolphins); SNG Lockett 1238 var. (same); HGC 6, 340 var. (same); Rauch E-12, 62. 0.29g, 7mm, 9h.

Extremely Fine. Extremely Rare; only one other on CoinArchives.

From the J. Greiff Collection, assembled prior to 1998.

The upper dolphin is usually depicted facing to left and the lower dolphin to right. On this specimen the dolphins are facing in the opposite direction. The position of the ethnic is also in reverse compared with other specimens (see for example, Roma E-Sale 94, lot 274). It is possible that this is a contemporary imitation and the reverse die was not engraved in reverse to achieve a likeness with the prototype.
