Marcus Aurelius or Lucius Verus Æ 21mm of Zeugma, Commagene. AD 161-180. AVP ... OVHPON, radiate and draped bust to right / ΖЄVΓΜΑΤЄѠΝ B in three lines within laurel wreath. RPC IV.3 Online 8528 (temporary). 9.83g, 21mm, 12h.
Very Fine. Very Rare; an extremely enigmatic type.
From a private UK collection.
Debate continues as to the identity of the obverse portrait, as to date no examples of the type with complete legends have been found. It has been postulated that there are in fact two distinct issues, one for each of Aurelius and Verus, or that the type refers to both Augusti in the legend. A further possible suggestion, evidenced by the present example, is that the coin is of Aurelius as Caesar, the legend being AVP ... OVHPON (for Aurelius Verus).
