Thessaly, Krannon Æ 14mm. Circa 400-375 BC. Die signed by the engraver or magistrate. Jugate heads of Thessalos, wearing petasos, and horse to right / Bull butting to right; above, trident to left, below, letters (EV or ΛE or EΛ?) on ground line, KPAN in exergue. BCD Thessaly I 1082 var. (trident to right); BCD Thessaly II 115.2 var. (same); HGC 4, 388. 1.99g, 14mm, 6h.

Very Fine.

From the J. Greiff Collection, assembled prior to 1998.

Two of the coins which formed part of lot 115 in BCD Thessaly II have a 'V' form below the bull on the reverse (115.2-3). There they are described as a 'simplified representation' of a plant in the form of a letter V however it is noted in the catalogue that Alan Walker felt that a letter was being represented (BCD Thessaly I 1082). The BCD II catalogue makes a comparison with lot 755.5 (Trikka hemidrachm) where another 'V' form is found on the ground line accompanied by the letter E in the field, and described as a signature (EV or ΛE or EΛ, p. 311). It is suggested in BCD II that the 'V' form might be a visual pun representing both a plant and a letter (p. 70). On this specimen, the V appears to be accompanied by an additional letter, possibly the letter E. Although not noted in their respective catalogue descriptions, this also appears to be true of BCD Thessaly I 1082 and BCD Thessaly II 115.2.
