Great Britain - Sovereign 1826, Gold, GEORGE IV 1820–1830 Head left. Rev. crowned arms.S. 3801; Fr. 377; KM. 696.Recovered from the SS Central America.
The SS Central America, also known as the 'Ship of Gold', operated as a steamer on the US east coast. In September of 1857 she departed on her final voyage from Panama to New York, carrying aboard more than 13.000 kg of gold. Off the coast of the Carolinas a hurricane capsized the ship, causing the loss of most of her passengers as well as the enormous cargo. The economical damage was so great that it is said to have contributed to the Panic of 1857. After having been lost for over a century the wreck was finally located and identified in 1988. It took another twenty years for salvage to begin. The cargo, then valued at $8 million, is estimated to equal about $765 million in 2021.In a special gold-rimmed PCGS slab with sealed-in certificate and accompanied by California gold dust also recovered from the wreck.
