Portugal - 2 Cruzados or 800 Reais n.d, Gold, D. FELIPE I (II de Espanha) 1580–1598 Lisbon mint. Crowned arms dividing L / B – II. Rev. short cross with five pellets in angles.Gom. 23.01 (RARA).The death of Dom Sebastião of Portugal in 1578 led to a succession crisis on the Iberian peninsula. Multiple claimants put forth their claim, but eventually Phillip II of Spain won out due to his larger resources. The two nations of the Iberian peninsula were now unified under a single monarch; its coinage however remained sperate. Phillip II struck an impressive array of coinage as king of Portugal, amongst which the double cruzado undoubtedly stands out for its size and craftmanship. The denomination is seldomly encountered in private hands; the example we have the privilege of presenting here is certainly one of the finest surviving specimens. Superbly struck!6.06 g. RRR Extremely fine
