South Africa - Pond 1894, Gold, PAUL KRÜGER 1883–1902 Bust left. Rev. arms with single shaft wagon tongue.H. Z47; Fr. 2; KM. 10.2.A surprising amount of coins with the portrait of Paul Kruger exist that have been modified in certain ways. The overwhelming majority have been engraved to show the president wearing a top hat and smoking a pipe. The leading theory is that these coins were tooled by Boer prisoners of war while living in British concentration camps. As gold was likely not often available in the camps engraved gold Ponden and ½ Ponden are much rarer than their silver counterparts!7.76 g. RR.
