Kz. klimmende leeuw CONFIDENS· DNO· NON· MOVETVR jaartal.Delm. 852 suppl (R.3).; V. 124.2/4.Afkomstig uit het wrak van Piet Hein's vlaggenschip De Hollandia, vergaan in 1627 in de Braziliaanse Allerheiligenbaai. De Hollandia, na eerst in 1610-1612 dienst te hebben gedaan onder de vlag van de VOC, maakte al deel uit van de eerste vaart van de Geoctrooieerde West-Indische compagnie in 1622. Als vlaggenschip van Piet Hein deed zij ook dienst tijdens zijn tweede tocht van 1626 tot 1627. Tijdens een poging tot herovering van San Salvador, de toenmalige hoofdstad van de Brazilië, zou het schip echter vergaan. Admiraal Piet Hein gebruikte het schip om de vuurkracht van het Braziliaanse fort aan te trekken, waarbij het schip echter meermaals geraakt werd. Tegen middernacht stond het schip op zinken en werd De Hollandia in brand gestoken om te verhelpen dat zij in vijandelijke handen zou vallen. Piet Hein zou zijn roem voornamelijk vergaren door de verovering van de zilvervloot tijdens zijn volgende tocht, toch is de ontsnapping uit de Allerheiligenbaai eveneens een belangrijk moment voor de Braziliaanse en Nederlandse historie. De opgedoken artefacten en munten uit De Hollandia werden in 1983 bij Christie's in Amsterdam geveild; munten afkomstig uit dit uiterst historische wrak komen heden ten dagen slechts zelden weer op de markt!
From the wreck of Piet Heyn's flagship The Hollandia, which sunk off the coast of the Brazilian Bay of All Saints in 1627. The Hollandia, after having served in the Indies in 1610-1612, was already part of the first voyage of the Dutch West Indies Company in 1622. During Piet Heyn's second voyage of 1626-1627, she served as his flagship. While attempting to recapture the city of San Salvador, the ship was used to draw the firepower from the Brazilian fort, while the rest of the Dutch ships safely sailed out of reach. Unfortunately, she was however hit repeatedly and slowly began sinking. The ship was evacuated and set aflame to prevent her falling into enemy hands. Piet Heyn would rise to fame mostly because of his capture of the Spanish fleet of silver one year later, yet the escape from the Bay of All saints remains an important part of Brazilian and Dutch history. The coins and artefacts recovered from the wreck would be sold at Christie's in Amsterdam in 1983; coins from this exceptional wreck nowadays rarely appear on the market!
