East Africa 7.4.1920 P-7 PMG Choice About UNC 58 1 Rupee
Most notes from the British colony of East Africa are typically encountered in well circulated grades, with very few exceptions. This 1 Rupee dates back to 1920 and is the single finest in the PMG population report for this type. A very short-lived issue denominated in Rupees, as later in the same year, the country switched to the Florin. Most of these, even when encountered in advanced collections, are VF or XF at best. To find one in About Uncirculated condition, such as seen here, is highly unusual.
We had the pleasure of studying this note prior to its certification by PMG. It is fully original, with strong embossing on the serial numbers. Some minor counting flicks are present, but the note is free of distracting folds. We are not sure why PMG did not think this note deserved the "EPQ" designation, as strong embossing and originality can clearly be seen even in the PMG plastic. Strong color on both sides is seen and the corners remain sharp. There's a smudge of toning on the back, but it is inconsequential and not distracting. Overall, a fantastic example of this important type from a heavily collected British colony.
